Frequently asked questions
Is placement included in the CHC30125 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care?
The course requires a minimum of 160 hours of work placement in an approved early childhood education and care service.
During your placement, you will apply your knowledge in a real-world setting under the supervision of qualified educators. Key activities include:
Supporting daily care routines
Engaging with babies, toddlers, and young children
Facilitating play-based learning and observing child development
Adhering to service policies and safety standards
To support your learning and assess your workplace competency, an BLISS trainer and assessor will visit you on-site during your placement to offer direct guidance and feedback.
What age groups of children will I be working with during placement?
To satisfy qualification standards and gain well-rounded workplace experience, students must complete practical placement across three core age brackets:
Babies: Under 12 months
Toddlers: 13 to 23 months
Preschool-Aged Children: 2 to 6 years
Working across the full early childhood age range ensures you develop hands-on skills tailored to every stage of early development.
Can I do my placement at a service where my child attends?
Yes, this is generally allowed—but with specific conditions.
For centre-based services (like long day care), we advise against working in the same room your child attends. This can create boundary issues and affect the dynamics of both your learning and your child’s experience. Most services will also prefer that you are placed in a different room. That said, it’s ultimately the service’s decision, and some may approve it under certain circumstances.
In family day care (FDC), separating rooms isn’t always possible due to the home-based setting. In these cases, we assess placements individually. We may approve it as long as all other requirements are met—particularly access to all age groups, and supervision by a suitably qualified educator.
If you’re considering a placement where your child is enrolled, speak to your trainer or our placement team first. We’ll help determine if the arrangement is acceptable and whether any adjustments are needed to ensure full compliance.
When do I start my placement?
You will typically begin your placement after completing the core theoretical units of the course. This ensures you have the foundational knowledge required to confidently perform workplace tasks.
Your trainer will guide you on the exact timing based on your course progress, readiness, local service availability, and any state or territory requirements.
Can I count paid work hours toward my placement?
Yes, you can count paid hours—provided that your job and workplace meet the necessary regulatory and course requirements.
To be eligible, your employment must meet the following criteria:
Approved Service: The facility must be an approved early childhood education and care provider (such as an ACECQA-approved long day care centre or preschool).
Relevant Duties: Your day-to-day responsibilities must align directly with the tasks expected of a student on placement. You cannot simply log hours for unrelated tasks like cleaning or general administration. Your paid work must encompass core learning and educational activities.
Qualified Supervision: A Diploma-qualified supervisor (or higher) must oversee your work and be authorized to sign off on your hours and practical competencies.
Assessment & Visits: You must still complete all required placement assessment tasks and receive trainer visits just like any other student.
Some employers are highly supportive and may allow dedicated time during shifts for observations, supervision, and assessment tasks, while others may require you to complete certain assessments outside of your regular work hours. Both approaches are acceptable as long as all course requirements are successfully fulfilled.
If you are already working within the early childhood sector, please reach out to our team at your earliest convenience. We will work closely with you to confirm your role's suitability and coordinate a flexible placement and assessment strategy around your employment.
Do you organise Placement for students?
BLISS offers full support to assist you in finding a position at a suitable early childhood service.
You are also welcome to arrange your own placement through personal or professional contacts—such as a local childcare centre, kindergarten, or a setting where you currently work or volunteer. Arranging your own placement often allows for a smoother transition and can open doors to future job opportunities.
Why does BLISS conduct placement visits?
We conduct placement visits because it is both a regulatory requirement and a core pillar of quality training. Your trainer will observe you in action, check your progress, and provide real-time feedback to help you build confidence and refine your skills. But it’s not just about compliance—early learning services expect it. Many centres will not accept students from providers that fail to visit, and in some cases, students from non-visiting RTOs have been overlooked for jobs or had the validity of their qualifications questioned. Furthermore, inadequate training oversight and poor assessment practices have led to regulatory bodies revoking qualifications from graduates of low-standard providers.
At BLISS, we have experienced trainers based across Australia to support you. Your trainer will visit you on-site during placement to guide your development, ensure everything is on track, and complete your required practical assessments. Choosing a provider that conducts regular site visits protects both the value of your qualification and your future employability.
Can I do my placement in a family day care?
Yes—but only if specific conditions are met. The placement site must be an approved family day care (FDC) service and meet all the same national requirements as a long day care centre.
The service must:
Be registered and approved by ACECQA
Give you access to babies, toddlers, and preschool-aged children
Have a supervisor with at least 4 years of full-time equivalent experience in early childhood education
Have a supervisor who holds a Diploma or higher in early childhood or an approved equivalent
Not be operated by a close relative (parent, child, sibling, partner, etc.)
